ABSTRACT

This research work finds out the effectiveness of agricultural cooperative in enhancing farmer’s productivity. The design used for these study was a survey method The targeted population is 70 (seventy) out of which 40 were selected as a sample size for the study The research questions used were: what are the effectives of agricultural cooperatives on the efficiency of the cooperative business?

What are the socio- economic assistance rendered to the members of the agricultural cooperative? The statistical tool used were questionnaire and interview, findings of the study was concluded that agricultural cooperative if well organized and patronized contributed effectively to members productivity as compared to working outside the cooperative society.

Basic recommendation includes land should be made available to the agricultural cooperatives societies in order to encourage their existence. There should be a standard medium for education and training of these farmers as web as good communication channel between farmers and policy makers as a stewardship towards general economic development.

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Cooperative is a natural human act throughout history, individuals as well as communities had been contributing money, energy and material for the purpose of collective achievement of objectives, these objectives ranges from subsistence farm through a business enterprise.

Cooperative has helped in developing various aspect of development among which is agriculture. Throughout the world, cooperative had been known to be a variable instrument for socioeconomic transformation in developing countries like Nigeria.

Furthermore, Nigeria is an agrarian economic which is dominated by peasant farmers. These peasants constitute about 90% of the farming population and supply about 75% of the food requirement in the country.

These peasants were multitude rural dwellers scattered over wide geographical expanses of umbrella of agricultural cooperatives.

Consequently, has been used all over the world as the best agencies for dealing with the land reform, improved storage facilities, processing methods and marketing of farm produce to the best advantage of these farmers, agricultural cooperatives also dealt with the transfer of agricultural technologies through the aid of extension services, it provides financial accessibility through the establishment of Nigeria agricultural cooperative and development banks as well as other micro- credit institutions and further greater participation of rural people in these virtues its of no doubt farmers therefore higher productivity through cooperative of their form “agricultural cooperative”(Sunny O. 2007).

 1.2      Statement of the Problem

Cooperative of whatever type are required to satisfy & member’s is need, be it economic, social, cultural or political (I.C.A 1995). According to Berko S.Y “Agricultural Cooperatives are those cooperative whose members are purely agriculturists” Obodoechi 0. (2006) had it that special attention has been paid to agricultural cooperatives by better life for rural women and family economic advancement program (FEAP) because of the recognition of the fact that efficient cooperative can raise the productivity, total output and incomes of producers mainly due to the education, rationalization and competitive effect of cooperatives have been found as the most appropriate avenues for rural mobilization and organization and further contents that in some ways, agricultural cooperative serves as the most suitable channel for delivering inputs and other services to the multitude of rural dwellers scattered over wide geographical expanse of land.

Cooperative is also used as the best agency  for dealing with land reform, improved storage processing method and greater participation of farmers in these virtues. Farmers could be relieved of so many burdens as well attaining so many privileges for instance, Sunny 0.0 (2007) agrees that “agricultural cooperative also dealt with the transfer of agricultural technologies through the establishment of Nigeria cooperatives and development banks as well as other micro-credit institutions. The timely delivery of affordable price of production inputs and farm implements.”

However, despite the underlying motive and efforts of government towards agricultural cooperatives, farmers are still faced with sorts of exploitations as a result. Therefore, this study aims at investigating the effects of agricultural cooperatives in entrancing farmer’s productivity.

1.3 Objective of the Study

The primary objectives of carrying out this study are:

1. To find out the effectiveness of agricultural cooperative in entrancing farmer’s productivity

2. To identify the type of socio-economic assistance rendered by agricultural cooperatives

3. To compare the effect of agricultural cooperative as member of cooperatives society to non members of cooperative society

4. To determine the factors that militates against the effectiveness of agricultural cooperatives

1.4      Research Questions

To guide this study, the following research question were put forward?

1. What are the effects of agricultural cooperatives on the efficiency of the cooperative business?

2. What are the socio-economic assistance rendered to the members of agricultural cooperative?

3. What is the effect of agricultural cooperatives as members and non-members of the cooperative society?

4. What are the factors that militate against the effectiveness of agricultural cooperative?

1.5 Significance of the Study

This research examines the effectiveness of agricultural cooperative in enhancing farmer’s productivity. The significance of a study of this management cannot be over emphasized. The government cooperative development, cooperate organization involved in cooperative activities, agricultural cooperative societies in particular,  incoming students, as well as other researchers alike will find this study really significant especially as they utilize the findings.

To government cooperative development and of course cooperative organization engage in cooperative ventures the finding of this study will be used as a basis for activities of forming such societies cannot be defeated, furthermore, members of the public who are interested in cooperatives will use the result of this study as an insight into the formation of new society especially agricultural cooperatives or joining existing ones.

It will contribute in creating more awareness in the inhabitant of the immediate community as regards the effectiveness of agricultural cooperatives in enhancing member’s productivity and thus encourage them to take maximum advantage of the opportunities opened to them.

It should also be noted that this study is scholarly important to students undergoing research work similar to the present study and

sOther arch alike will find this work similar to the present study and other arch alike find this work as a reference material or a springboard for their own research work.

1.6    Scope of the Study

This research work examines the effectiveness of agricultural cooperatives toward improving the production level of members. An examination of how the activities of how agricultural cooperatives affect the member’s productivities as well as the practical economic assistance given to such members fall within the scope of this work. The study also covers an in depth examination of the problems that would be militating against the effectiveness of agricultural cooperatives.
