CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

The student industrial work scheme (SIWES) is a skill training programme which forms part of the approved minimum academic standards in the various DEGREE/DIPLOMA/NCE programmes for all Nigeria tertiary institution.

It seeks to bridge the gap existing between theory and practice of engineering technology, sciences and other professional educational programme in the Nigeria tertiary institutions. It is aimed at exposing students to machines and equipment, professional work methods and ways of safe guarding the work areas and workers in industrial and other organizations. The scheme is tripartite program involving the tertiary institution and the industry (employers of labour) and the industrial training fund (I.T.F).

1.1ย  OBJECTIVE OF SIWES

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  The main objectives of SIWES are to:

1. Provide an avenue for students in the Nigeria tertiary institutions to acquire industrial skills and experience in their course of study.

2. Prepare student for the work situation they are likely to meet after graduation

3. Expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipments and machinery that may not be available in the institutions.

4. Provide students an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in real work situation, there by bridging the gap between higher education and actual practice.

5. Make transition from the polytechnic to the world of work easier and thus enhance students contact for later job placement after graduation.

1.2ย ย  HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF SHEHU MOHAMMED ย ย  KANGIWA MEDICAL HOSPITAL

The medical and Health services Department of the Kaduna polytechnic started as a one room in the present CST in 1968 by Mrs.ย  Wiltonย  ,the wife of the then librarian ยญยญยญยญยญBritish.].She worked on part time base with one dispenser and one cleaner. In 1969, a permanent staff was employed to work full time The clinic the expanded within a year to a two room clinic with one doctor, one Nurse, one dispenser, and two cleaners.

However, with the rapid development of the institution, it was realized that the clinic was grossly inadequate for theย ย  rapidly expanding institution, so the idea of building a sick bay was conceived and the building was completed in 1974 and the clinic moved to its permanent site, which is present medical center and was called a sick bay.

The periods between 1974 and 1984 were years of unprecedentedย ย  development in terms of facilities and manpower. The development continued with building of an extension that is almost the size of the size bay.

The building houses the x-ray department, Dental surgery, Dental hygiene and Dental laboratory, labor room, and a lying in ward.

In 1985, the sick bay was renamed after the first indigenous secretary of the institution and time Governor of Sokoto state Late Alh.Shehu Muhammed Kangiwa at present the Shehu Muhammed Kangiwa medical centre is composed of 8 departments and 10 staffs, with branches in the satellite campuses namely; CASS, CBMS, and CES which are managed by senior Nursing officers and medical records staff The staff population breakdown is as follows;

8 medical Doctors

33 Nursing officers

2 Pharmacists and 7 pharmacy Technicians

3 Laboratory Scientist

8 Medical Record officers

1 Dental Technician

8 Community and Environmental Health officers

ย 1.3ย  MEDICAL LABORATORY

Medical laboratory is designed laboratory where medical test and investigation the carried out in order to obtain information about the health or body condition of a patient. It is well equipped with instruments, regents for proper diagnosis treatment and prevention and control of disease.

SECTIONS UNDER MEDICAL LABORATORY

1. Medical microbiology parasitology laboratory

2. Haematology laboratory

3. Chemical pathology laboratory

4. Virology laboratory

5. Histology

Immunology/serelogy laboratory

1.4 DEPARTMENTS IN A MEDICAL LABORATORY

A medical laboratory has the following department and their different functions.

RECEPTION: This is place where patients are welcomed and received. It also serves as a place where samples are collected and where samples are collected and where results are given out after the tests had been conducted.

HEMATOLOGY: This section consists of automated and manual analysis of blood e.g blood grouping, PCV, ESR e.t.c here the whole blood is used for conducting tests.ย 

CLINICAL BIOCHEMISTRY: This section usually collected body serum, plasma, urine to test for abnormality and disease in the body e.g Blood sugar, lipids protein e.t.c.

MICROBIOLOGY: This is a section which deals with the investigation of micro organisms in stool, blood, urine etc.

1.5 LABORATORY RULES AND REGULATIONS

In order to minimize laboratory hazards to both human and its environment when working in the laboratory, the following rules and regulations should be obeyed always:
