CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

There are many ways to examine the factors which can significantly impact on tourist decision, destination selection, one popular way of which is to look at destinations attraction. Attractions have been viewed by many researchers as the reason for tourist visiting a particular destination (Richard, 2002) there are two perspective that a destinations attraction can be examined namely, tourism sites which are physically include in the destination .tourism is the business of providing and marketing service and facilities for pleasure travelers (nona, 1999).

It is a form of recreation that requires leaving to other places, whether near or far (olukesusi, 1999). It can also be defined as the phenomenon arising from visits(or stay away from home) outside the normal place of resident for any reason other thanΒ  furthering an occupation remunerated from within the place visited(Bukat and medlik, 1999). From all the above definition a tourism could be regarded as a person who is visiting at least one day in an area basically for purpose of leisure or business.

Tourism involves the movement and stay of foreigners inside and outside a city or a region, provided of the journey and the stay of the stranger is not connected with remunerated activities. In this sense, it is the sum total of thee of temporary or start term movement of people from their point of original to a destination outside their place of work or residence (leanard and carson, 1997) view tourism as the sum of phenomenon and relationships arising from thetraced and stay of non-resident in so far as they lead to permanent and are not connected with any earning activities is regarded as tourism.

It involves the process of visiting for at least one night for leisure and holiday. Business and professional or tourism purpose (john, 1991) thus among others, the reason for tourism include cultural, historical, recreational environmental and ethical consideration. It is a net earner of foreign exchange and a major contributor to national balance of payment.

Some African countries like Tanzania, Kenya, Algeria, Monaco, Gambia, and Egypt are new reaping the socio- economic benefit from the development of tourism resources. This support the view of their (Robinson 1997) the tourism is a great contributor to nation’s economy in socio cultural, economic and political ways. Beautiful natural sceneries as well as cultural artifacts for the purpose of tourism are far more available in the rural communities than the urban areasΒ  (ikporukpo, 1993)(David, 1995) noted that the natural of rural areas, which attract visitors , increasingly have to be protected from over use and miss use and manage for specific leisure activities.

Factor affecting the participating in tourism activities includes gender, educational background, and purpose of visit, age, occupation, the required facilities as well as the available transportation system. Other factors are environmental political, religious, cultural and social differences. The supply factors that pull tourist to specific destination include the level of development of the tourism potentials, provision of infrastructural amenities, and the quality of the environment, the supply accommodation and the accessibility to tourism potentials

Other factors affecting the level of patronage of tourism attraction are the qualities of accommodation, attraction of the destination, price level in destination area as well as transport. The non-economy determinant which constitute the motivational and structural factors which influence the demand for tourism include urbanization, the travel trade, marketing, as well as education.

Other factor are financial constrain as well as manpower development and motivation. All this factors hinder tourism development in third world countries. Another impediment identified by Aworitefe (2008) is lack of understanding of the importance of the recreation and tourism as well as bad management. The tourism is a concomitant sustainable development.

It is great generator of economic wealth for developed countries like United States of amerce, Germany, japan francs and Canada. Thechallenges of international tourism has been accepted by few African countries like Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, Egypt and Algeria this countries are now reaping the socio economic and psychological benefit that are associated with tourism development

In Nigeria, little attention has been given to tourism development (Afolabi 1992). The reason for this is not unconnected with the low economic structure as well as the rural economic base on the country. However, the nation is very reach both in ecology and culture.

It has a wide variety of biodiversity. It is also blessed with many traditional festivals and cultural attractions on this note Ikporakpo(2003). The multiplicity of cultures in the country provides a good setting for the evaluation of various cultural heritage – based tourist facilities.

Borno state has aboundant tourism resources in urban and rural places. There are several potentials for relaxation and holiday in tourist attractions. Sambisa game reserve, chard basin, lake alau, gwaza mountain, gar walama(walama mountain) sandakyarami park and other manmade and natural features(www.ordpng.org)
