1.1 Background of the Study

Organizations whether profit seeking or non-profit seeking is established to achieve other primary objectives or goals of the owners (Ray 2003). In attempt to attain these objectives, both humans and material resources are mobilized and assigned task and responsibilities for human efficiency.

Cooperative can be defined as an, autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their socio-economic, cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprises (I.C.A 2000) agricultural cooperative is different from other business organization as evident in it’s practice and value as entrenched in it’s principles. This principle makes cooperative to be of impact toward economic enhancement of rural area.

Agricultural has played a significant role in 90’s to 20’s when it largely produced food and raw materials, and were the sources of foreign exchange in Nigeria. Agricultural product for both local consumption and export that are produces by rural farmers cannot be over emphasized; food input in (1990’s) 2010’s counted for small proportion of the total input bill by 2010 to date. The input bills for food have risen, thus trend can be contributed primarily to neglect of rural farmers. This resulted to their migration to urban centers for greater posture. The rural farmers are represented by the small family holdings with usually small size of farm lead simple implement is employed which result in law output, the use of modern techniques is only by few of them and backwardness of using modern techniques is due to non-availability of financial capability and alternatives.

This is why today, Nigeria imports most of foods they can produce in their own land most especially rice.

Agricultural cooperative are societies organized to assist farmers to go into large scale farming by providing agricultural inputs like fertilizer, pesticide, insecticide, physical cash (loan) e.t.c. This is meant to facilitate the enhancement of the rural areas since agriculture is their basis of live-hood.
