1.0 INTRODUCTION
Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease caused by an infection with the bacteria mycobacterium, tuberculosis (TB) primarily affect the lungs, but it can also affect organ in the central nervous system, lymphatic system and circulatory system among others. The disease was called “consumption” in the past because of the way it could consume from within anyone who become infected.
According to medilexion’s medical dictionary tuberculosis is a specified disease caused by infection with mycobacterium tuberculosis, the tubercle bacillus which can affect the tissue or organ of the body.
1.1 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF NATIONAL TUBERCULOSIS AND LEPROSY TRAINING CENTER SAYE ZARIA
The national tuberculosis and leprosy training centre was established twenty three years ago precisely in 1991. It is about four kilometer from Zaria city Kaduna State, popularly called “Layi” has three mandates patient care training and research on tuberculosis and leprosy.
The centre organizes in service training course for different cadre of health workers on both clinical and programmatic management for tuberculosis, HIV and leprosy. The principle of adult learning experimental learning and problem passed learning mythologies. The hospital and tuberculosis within the state are used for practical attachment during training.
The centre support organization and partner development of guideline and training material based on need.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The main aim of this project is to determine whether the disease is dependent on age – group, the cause of the tuberculosis disease as well as the epidemiology of tuberculosis disease as seen at National tuberculosis and leprosy centre, Zaria Kaduna State between January 2004 and December 2013, to evaluate the efficiency of the treatment used in its management.
1.3 AIMS AND OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The aim and objective of this project work is to study the case of tuberculosis in National tuberculosis and leprosy centre, saye Zaria Kaduna State for the period of 2004 – 2013 and to determine the following:
1 The prevalence of the disease
2 To determine whether the disease is dependent on age – group.
3 The cause of the disease
1.4 SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY
1 to improve the knowledge of health about the factor that hinder effective control of community.
2 To promote the awareness and early identification of tuberculosis symptoms in the community.
3 To determine whether people are still having some believes on tuberculosis.
1.5 HYPOTHESIS
For the chi- square statistic
Ho: The effect of tuberculosis disease is independent on age- group.
Hi: The effect of tuberculosis disease is dependent on age – group.
For the t-test statistic
Ho: The effect of tuberculosis disease between male and female are the same.
Hi: The effect of tuberculosis disease between male and female are the same.
1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This study is a of tuberculosis treated at the National tuberculosis and leprosy centre saye Zaria Kaduna State between 2004 – 2013.
The means of reviewing in this study were the hospital case notes and treatment cards from the medical records offices.
1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS
TUBERCULOSIS: Is a potentially fatal contagious disease that can affect almost any part of the body but is mainly an infection of the lungs.
DISE ASE: Illness or sickness characterized by specific sign and symptoms
LEPROSY: An infection disease of the skin, nervous system and mucus, membrane that is caused by bacteria mycobacterium leprae.
