CHAPTER ONE

1.0  GENERAL INTRODUCTION

1.1  Preamble

Every language of the world has its particular and organized system of communication. These aspects of peculiarity range from lexical- morphological forms, syntactic order to phonological patterns. Man’s ability to learn how to organize the named linguistic units and use them to communicate his thought, feelings and ideas with his fellow human beings is a unique characteristic that sets him apart from other primates.

This is why many language scholars view the phenomenon as exclusively part of the total behaviour of man. The relationship between  language and society is referred to as sociolinguistics; a branch of macro linguistics that has been recognize and given different definitions by different scholars, For example, to some, Sociolinguistics studies have shown that language use is not only influenced by social factors such as age, class, ethnicity, and gender but also by the context of use.

Age as a sociolinguistics variable can be used to determine differences in speech. This factor is significant because of the underlying assumption that older speakers use forms closer to the original variety, while younger speakers are initiators of language change; young teenagers are said to initiate change as a result of wanting to differentiate themselves from the older generations, Another example is the higher social mobility of youths exposes them to other varieties that consciously become part of their ascents and general language use.

In addition, individuals can signal their ethnicity by the language they use. For example, there are certain words that an individual will decide not to use when communicating because they stand out as taboo words to them.

Furthermore, language variation based on gender focuses on the contrasts between observable featuresthat mark the difference between women and men’s speech. Women and men do not speak in exactly the same way in any community. This is because their choice of basic vocabulary differ respectively.

Gender variation is premised on the fact that women, being less motivated to convey social power and identity within the group or closed social network, are quicker to let go of conservative identity markers than men. Language scholars also believe that Female speakers tend to use more prestigious forms than male speakers with the same general social background .In some societies, there are much more marked differences between male and female speech which is quite different in their pronunciations of certain words.

Gender difference can be noticed also when gender pairs are having a conversations. For example, women generally discuss their personal topics more than men. while men appear to prefer non personal topics such as sports and news. Language experts also believe that men tend to respond to an expression of feelings in problems by giving advice on solutions while women are more likely to mention personal experiences that match or connect with the other woman’s.

In gender pair’s conversation, the rate of men interrupting women is substantially greater than the reverse. For example, women are reported to use more expressions associated with tentativeness such as hedges (sort of, kind of) and ‘tags’ (isn’t it, don’t you) when expressing an opinion.

1.2 Statement of the Research Problem

In every society, men and women tend to use language in slightly different ways therefore it is often claimed that language is discriminatory against females and these assertions has raised the following questions:

– How does gender affect language use among male and female students?

– Which of the genders is more conscious of language use?

-Are there differences in the language use of male and female?

– What are the factors responsible for the differences in the speech of men and women?

– What are the linguistics interpretations or influence for such difference?

1.3 Aims and Objectives

This research is designed to critically examine the use of language by male and female gender. In other words, the study seeks among other objectives the following

To find out the gender differentiation in language use among students.

To examine the factors responsible for differences in the speech of male and female.

To identify the linguistic interpretation or influence that makes these differences possible.

1.4  Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The study tends to cover area of language like sociolinguistics especially the use of language by male and female undergraduates by carefully studying sets of speakers in a meeting at Local Government Education Authority School Barnawa One.

The scope of the study therefore is aparent to staff communication particularly at the school’s parent teachers association meeting between parents and staffs within the school premises oflocal government education authority school Barnawa One in Kaduna south local government area of Kaduna State.

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study is significant in the sense that it will provide students with a clear picture and basis for understanding the differences in gender speech. It will serve as a source of information and discovery to those who do not understand how gender variation influence interaction. The study outcome will serve as an additional material to the already existing body of knowledge on this aspect of sociolinguistics studies.
