How to Become a Nurse in Nigeria

Nursing is one of the highly respected professions in Nigeria, the rush for the course by many candidates is impressive. Career Opportunities in Nursing include, general nursing, psychiatric nursing, pen operative nursing, public health nursing, orthopedic nursing, pediatric nursing, midwifery, anesthetic nurse, nurse administration with others. Any of these can be specialized on by anyone.

 One can be a nurse in Nigeria in two ways:

Registered Nurse (RN): The applicant can apply to any school of nursing for a three years programme, and upon completion, he/she would be subjected to an external exam conducted by the Nursing and Midwifery council of Nigeria. Passing this exam would make him a registered nurse.

University Degree: This is the second available option. This has to do with student apply for nursing into any university, run the program for five years and also be subjected to sit for external exams conducted by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, and the West Africa Health Examination Board.

Passing this exam will make them  trained nurse is a Registered Nurse(RN), Registered Midwife, Registered Public Health Nurse with a Bachelors degree in nursing (B.Sc.nursing).

To apply for your favourite nursing school in Nigeria, you need to meet up with a certain admission requirement in order to be qualified for admission.

The admission requirements for candidate seeking admission in the general nursing education programme, is the Senior Secondary School Certificate (WAEC, NECO, NAPTEB) or its equivalent, with 5 credits. The credit should include English Language and either Physics, chemistry, biology, or Health science at not more than 2 sittings. Those some schools may not accept NAPTEB for nursing
