The print and broadcast media has been prominent in disseminating information on the engagement of children in labour and or forced work. Radio and television posits that the world population especially in developing countries of Asia and Africa is made up of children (between ages 5-15) and about 60% of these children are engaged in one form of labour or another. For them, children should not have to work but International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates the number of working children aged between 5 and 14years to be about 250 million in the developing countries of whom at least 120 million are working full-time of these, 61percent in Latin America. Relatively, fewer children work in developed countries (ILO) Brawley .S. 1995 page 44-45.

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

International Organizations like ILO (International Labour Organization), UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization), WHO (World Health Organization), UNICEF (United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund) sees child labour as a serious global issue, it is the contention of these organizations that the engagement of children in labour is harmful in several ways to the children, the family and the society. It is their belief that it impairs the physical and mental development of children. It affects the family image and rubs society of her future leaders and labour force.

It is this conception that the act of child labour is viewed as a deviation from the rule even though it is assuming epidemic dimensions. The international and local organizations have carried out against the scourge as an evil act. Legislations have been put in place to discourage child labour and organizations have spring up to pursue the legislation to the letter.

Since Nigeria is a member of this organization, an action to the country of these conventions is viewed as a deviation and a break of an international law. An effort of the “Wotclef” led by the vice president’s wife is an effort towards putting to an end child labour work in Nigeria.

This project therefore, intends to study the conception of child labour, looking at it from its historical frameworks causes and consequences on the individual, the family and the society at large. The research will also attempt to proffer solutions to the condition.

In addition to news stories, feature articles and investigative journalism, sporadic mass media education and campaigns usually endeavor to broaden community knowledge of child labour and neglect, to influence people’s attitudes towards children and young people and to change behavior that contribute to, or participate, the problem of child labour and neglect in our communities.

Others argue, however, that mass media campaigns and media coverage of the labour and neglect of children perform an important and significant role in placing issues such as child labour on the public and political agenda. Lindsey (1994:163) maintain that media has a central role in mediating information and forming public opinion. The media casts an eye on events that few of us directly experience and render remote happenings observable and meaningful.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The invention o satellite has afforded humanity the opportunity to watch events “Live” as they take place anywhere and anytime in the world. However, previous researcher saw that child labour has being harmful to the wellbeing of Nigeria children. It is on this note that this research work will have an insight overview on the previous work on this phenomenon and thereby contribute to the previous researchers findings on the impact of mass media campaign against child labour.

1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The goal of this thesis is to campaigns against child labour in Nigeria and the world at large. This objective will be reached through the empirical analysis of the data set that was collected within the framework of International program on the eliminating of child labour. The state statistics committee of Nigeria carried out a simple survey on child labour in 1999 in all regions of Nigeria. This program is the most detailed and comprehensive survey on child labour in the history of modern Nigeria. However, here are the major goals of the project:

  1. To know the patterns of media in the campaign against child labour.
  2. To identify factors responsible for child labour.
  3. To suggest solution to child labour in the country.

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTION

The research questions are arranged questions meant to be asked by the researcher and receive a feedback from the respondents. For researcher to achieve his/her aim, the following questions should be used:
