CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Islam is not a mere creed, nor does it simply represent an edification of souls or refinement and training of human virtues; rather a harmonious whole that also includes thinking about Allah’s manifestation of power on His creatures. Islam reminds us that it is not a religion to be paid a mere lip service; rather it is an all-encompassing way of life that must be practised faithfully and sincerely.

Islam as a religion does not deny that human beings have been given great reasoning power and natural instincts by Allah.2 It recognizes that God has created human beings with an innate ability to recognize and understand the truth that there is a Creator and a God.

Most people, including the greatest thinkers, would never deny the various signs that point to the existence of the Creator; hence, they wholeheartedly accept the notion of the existence of God. What has led some people astray and confused them is that they do not know about God properly and they do not have access to a true and preserved revelation from God. These sources of error show that beyond believing in God, a person also has to have the right information to know the truth about God.

God, the Creator, obviously, is a distinct and separate being from the created beings. Hence, God is not something within the realm of human experience, thought or testing.3 Therefore, to know the details about God and, in particular, to know what one’s relationship with God should be, one can only turn to God Himself and to His revelation.

There is no other possible way. No one except God has that knowledge. The revelation from God as embodied in the Qur’an and the inspired words of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) have thus provided a clear presentation concerning God.

Both the revelation and the prophetic traditions remove all doubts about His existence, power and knowledge. It also answers all the questions surrounding how one should behave toward the Almighty. In addition to that, by His mercy, God has provided extensive information about Himself through His names and attributes, such that He truly becomes the beloved, the sole object of worship and the main inspiration for one’s life.

The rational evidence for belief in Allah is based on Islam’s call to ponder on nature of Universe- the earth, the heavens, the mysteries, the natural law, the harmony and the unity of Universe.4 Furthermore, in many places in the Qur’an we find rational evidence proving that the universe is a sign of Allah, created and sustained by Him. Allah says:

 

“Verily, In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, and the ships which sail through the sea with that which is of use to mankind, and the water (rain) which Allah sends down from the sky and makes the earth alive therewith after its death, and the moving (living) creatures of all kinds that He has scattered therein, and in the veering of winds and clouds which are held between the sky and the earth, are indeed Ayat (proofs, evidences, signs, etc.) for people of understanding.” (Q2:164)

Therefore, we live in a time marked by unprecedented appearance of wonders and miraculous signs. Every day, we hear about the remarkable discoveries among Muslim and Ahlul-kitab. There are different forms of wonderous occurrences that take place in the world and they are mu`jizah, irha’s, ma`una, karra`mah, iha`nah, istidra`j and sihr.5Due to Allah’s Divine promises in the Qur’an, at intervals, which dazzle mankind with supernatural signs in addition to the already existing natural signs; the whole world has witnessed a sporadic release of such marvelous signs, both at global and local terrains.

In the modern age, when supernatural or things that are beyond ordinary happen or are manifested by the so-called teachers or gurus of other religions, it is easy to think that there may be truth in other religions or their leaders. But is this a correct thinking and should we accept these wonderous occurrences on face value without validating them? Perhaps, we should give these things a closer look and not fall prey to the machinations of Shaytan, who uses these false wonders to lead all and sundry astray from righteousness.

In other words, some prophets and messengers are backed by Allah’s miracles and extra-ordinary actions, just for the purpose of clarification, not for the purpose of counting.7The question is, what name can we call this incessant occurrences of miracles and wonders in Kwara State? As such, it is important to know the effectiveness and efficiency of these miraculous signs as they may positively affect the image of Islam in Kwara State. It is against this background that this study is devoted to the study of miraculous signs of Allah in Kwara State from 1999 to 2013.

 

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

In Kwara State, everybody is claiming to have seen one miraculous sign of Allah or the other.  Yet no one is ready to ponder on the message of such wonders.  In view of this, there is need to verify whether any of the miraculous signs has contributed to the propagation of Islam in Kwara State or not. Also there is need to know if they are real signs from Allah or they are magic performed by the enemy of Islam. Thus, the need for this study to look into the study of miraculous signs of Allah in Kwara State from 1999 to 2013 is an existing problem.

 

1.3 THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study is to provide useful information on some miraculous happenings in Kwara State from 1999 to 2013. The study would ascertain the factors that are responsible for the appearance of those miraculous signs of Allah in the area of study. The study would bring to fore the relevance of miraculous signs of Allah in Kwara State and it will as well assess these miraculous signs from the perspective of Islam.

Likewise, the study would examine the impact of these miraculous signs and this will allow us to know the purpose of miraculous signs of Allah in the land.
