Development Of An Automotive Air Conditioning Demonstration Unit

Download the complete project materials on Development Of An Automotive Air Conditioning Demonstration Unit from chapter one to chapter five with references

ABSTRACT

The development of an automotive air conditioning demonstration unit was made with the aim of producing a unit to be used in the lab or workshop when conducting practical. The method involved in the construction are cutting, drilling, bolting, welding and brazing etc. It comprises of electric motor, compressor, condenser, capillary tube, evaporator, etc. the various components parts were assembled together on a metal boardplate by welding brazing and piping.  The automotive air conditioning demonstration unit was tested and the co-efficient of performance was 1.37 as well as the mass of circulation of air was 1.049kg/min.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.0  Introduction

The introduction of air conditioning into engineering field was a break though a technical development where building vehicle etc. are being distributed with conditional air to improve its thermal comfort and indoor air quality.

An automotive air conditioning can refer to any form of technology that modifies the condition of air (heating, cooling, dehumidifying cleaning, ventilation or air movement).

Air conditioning are common household or industrial appliance that consist of a thermal insulated compartment and various components i.e. compressor, condenser, evaporator, capillary tube this various component parts transfer heat form one device to another. E.g. circulating refrigerant enters the compressor in the thermodynamic state known as situated vapour, and is compressed to a higher pressure resulting in a higher temperature as well.

The hot compressed vapour is then in the thermodynamic states known as superheated vapour and it is at a temperature and pressure at which it can be condensed with either cooling water or cooling air flowing across the coil or tubes. This is where the circulating refrigerant rejects heat from the system and the rejected heat is carried away by either the water or the air (whichever may be the case).

The condensed liquid refrigerant in the thermodynamic state known as a saturated liquid is next routed through an expansion value where it undergoes an abrupt reduction in pressure. That pressure reduction result in the adiabatic flash evaporation of a part of the liquid refrigerant the auto refrigeration effect of the adiabatic flash evaporation lowers the temperature of the liquid and vapour refrigerant mixture to where it is colder than the temperature of the enclosed space to be refrigerated.

The cold mixture is then routed though the coil or tubes in the evaporator a fan circulates the warm air in the enclosed space across the coil or tubes carrying the cold refrigerant liquid and vapour mixture that warm air evaporates the liquid part of the cold refrigerant mixture. At the same time the circulating air is cooled and thus lowers the temperature. Of the enclosed space to the desired temperature. The evaporator is where the circulating refrigerant absorbs and removes heat which is subsequently rejected in the condenser and transferred elsewhere by the water or air used in the condenser.

1.1  Background of Study

An air conditioning  (often referred to as a/c or AC) is the process of altering the properties of air (primarily temperature and humidity) to  more comfortable conditions, typically with the aim of distributing the conditioned air to an occupied spaced such as building or a vehicle to improve thermal comfort and indoor air quality. In common use, an air conditioner is a device that lowers the air temperature. The cooling is typically achieved through a refrigeration cycle, but sometimes evaporation of free cooling is used.

Air conditioning system can also be made abased on desiccants in most general sense, air conditioning can refer to any form of technology that modifies the conditions of air (heating cooling do humidifying, cleaning ventilation or air movement) however in construction such as complete system of heating ventilation, and air conditioning is referred to a heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC as opposed to AC).

1.2  Statement of the Problem

The problem leading to the development of an automotive air conditioning demonstration unit was lack of practical knowledge in the operational principle of air conditioning system. Due to lack of functional air conditioning demonstration unit system in the laboratory, it is quite challenging for the student in understating the practical aspect of air conditioning system after they might have been thought theoretically in the class. Most refrigerants used in air conditioning has significant effect in the environment i.e R-11, R-12. This refrigerant causes ozone depletion to the environment as a result of global warming attention was paid in the selection of the refrigerant for this project. Thereby coming up with refrigerant

R-134a hydrocarbon refrigerant. This refrigerant has zero ozone depletion to the environment.

1.3  Aim and Objectives

The aim of this project is to develop an automotive air conditioning demonstration unit that will enhance quick or quick circulation of air in the environment when properly installed for practical demonstration and also to compare with that of functional car. The main research work is on fabrication of air conditioning unit part  i.e. compressor, electric motor, condenser, evaporator, capillary tube, and was  properly assembled together on metal board plate.

1.4  Significance of the Project

The importance of this project is to demonstrate to the study how air conditioning system works from its various component parts.

1.5  Scope of Work

The scope of the work include the following supply installation and mounted parts of the air conditioning demonstration unit. The air conditioning demonstration unit shall be suitable for 230v 50Hz single phase AC supply capable of performing the function as cooling, air circulating and filtering.

The air conditioning demonstration unit shall be complete by assembling the component parts i.e. electric motor compressor, condenser, capillary tube etc. on a metal board plate. the refrigerant to be used in the construction work is Freon-22.

The detailed specification for installation comprises of the following operational sequences:

(i)  Laying down the metal board plate

(ii) Laying refrigerant piping of 4m length and connecting both the units after drilling holes in the board.

(iii) Assembly of the components together in a single unit

(iv) Insulating the suction pipe with expended polythene foam tubing

(v)  Leak testing the entre system

(vi) Charging the refrigerant gas in the unit

(vii)Suitable electric wiring shall be carried out between the board of the air condition to the electric source.

1.6 Contribution to Knowledge

It gives the student knowledge in air conditioning and the principle of how air conditioning system works from the compressor, condenser capillary tube evaporator until cooling starts. And various method of heat transfer how heat is being transferred from one device another.

Air conditioner has contributed to our knowledge in many ways. The air conditioning means to affect the room air in such a way that people are comfortable and their productivity is not impeded the condition of the air is characterized by temperature pressure and humidity.
