Top Ten Most Competitive Universities In Nigeria With Highest Numbers Of Applicants In 2016. 
It is not new that, many university applicants continue to search for various top universities in Nigeria to study one course or the other.

They continue to ask us for list of top universities in Nigeria for medicine, top universities in Nigeria for engineering, top universities in Nigeria for law, accounting, pharmacy and many others.

One may ask for why applicants continue to search for top universities, the answer is not far fetched as nobody wants to obtain degree from unrecognized universities or schools where most of their courses is not accredited.

Though, there are lot of universities in Nigeria, but we have compiled the list of top ten most sough-ted after universities in Nigeria.


Note: This is not in anyway related to ranking of the universities, rather than that of the most applied for universities in Nigeria in 2016 UTME.

  1. University of Ilorin, UNILORIN (Better By Far): For some years now, university of Ilorin (my alma mata) has been on the lead of Nigerian universities by having the highest applicants in UTME. Yet again in 2016, University of Ilorin topped the list with 107,488 Candidates.Check out the list of most competitive courses in UNILORIN.

    UNILORIN minimum UTME cut off mark for 2016 was 180, while the highest was 240. The school admission capacity is slightly less than 12,000 per year. You can now reason why admission is so competitive in UNILORIN.
  2. University of Benin, (UNIBEN): University of Benin is a great school with strong academic repute. UNIBEN offers many courses in various faculties and departments. Every year, thousands of UTME and direct entry applicants do turn out and apply for admission into UNIBEN. Here are most competitive ten courses in UNIBEN.

    In 2016 UTME, 71,496 Candidates applied for admission into UNIBEN. That placed it on the second position on the list. UNIBEN minimum cut off mark is always 200.

  3. Nnamdi Azikiwe University, (UNIZIK): UNIZIK is also a Federal University in Nigeria. It was placed on the third position in 2016 UTME with 70,609 applicants list.   4. University of Nigeria, Nsukka, (UNN): Just like the top three Universities, UNN is also a Federal university in Nigeria. In 2016 UTME exercise, UNN was ranked number four universities in Nigeria with high numbers of applicants with 66,788 candidates that seek for admission into the school. The cut off mark was 200.
  5. University of Lagos, UNILAG: UNILAG is one of the most populous universities in Nigeria with a huge number of applicants every year. UNILAG is a federal university and has a total number of  62,472 applicants in 2016 UTME. UNILAG cut off mark for 2016 was 200. See the list of most competitive courses in UNILAG.
  6. Ahmadu Bello University, ABU: ABU Zaria is the first Northern university on the list. It can said to be the most populous university in the North and off course it also fall among the most sough-ted after universities in Nigeria. In 2016 UTME, ABU Zaria had a total number of 60,237 applicants. ABU minimum cut off mark was 180. Read ABU most competitive course.
  7. University of Ibadan, UI: UI is a pioneer university in Nigeria and well known for it reputable academic excellence. In 2016, university of Ibadan had a total numbers of 47, 497 applicants.   8. Bayero University Kano, BUK: In 2016 UTME, Bayero UNiversity Kano also had a great numbers of admission seekers who applied for admission into their school with the total numbers of  46,801 Applicants. BUK cut off mark was 180. See list of less competitive courses in BUK.
  9. Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU: Just like IFE students will hail. "Great Ife"... The school is a Federal university in Nigeria with total number of  43,965 UTME admission applicants in 2016. OAU minimum cut off mark is 200.
  10. University of Uyo, UNIUYO: This is the last on the list, with the total number of  41,645 admission seekers into University of Uyo. UNIUYO cut off mark was 200 in 2016.
