Download complete project materials on An Investigation Into The Mass Failure Of Otm Students In Shorthand In Nigeria Polytechnic  from chapter one to chapter five with references

Shorthand was developed and implemented by Isaac Pitman, who published the first edition in (1837). He spent half a century in improving it, and the great work has been controlled by several generations of expert. Shorthand is a phonetic system, the symbols do not represent letter, but rather represent sounds heard.

Pitman shorthand is categorized into two parts which are unvoiced and voiced pairs of sounds (such as /P/ and b /or/T/ and /D/) are represented by strokes are representing “light” sound (such as /P/and/T/) the thick strokes are representing heavy sound (Such as /B/and /D/) in doing this, it requires a writing instrument which is dedicated to aid the user’s writing speed. Specialist fountain pen (with fine and flexible rib) were formally used, but now H.B. pencil has been recommended to be used.

CHAPTER ONE

1.1   BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Pitman shorthand consists of 24 consonants, 12 vowels and 4 diphthongs.

Shorthand is a wholly symbolic and very largely phonetic form of writing. Therefore, students must know the different between consonants, vowels and diphthongs. Shorthand is a confidential way of handling information. It is also used to record special investigation. It also enables the secretary to receive comprehensive message on short time.   Shorthand also makes communication system easy, and effective when urgent. It also aids the speed in writing. Shorthand also enhances the spoken English of students since every thing about Shorthand is English.

A philosopher once said that “there is no failure in shorthand. There are only students or teachers who do not know how to learn or teach the subject. To be competent and proactive rather than reactive in this particular profession, one has to be serious, focused and eradicate the thought that the subject is difficult.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

In view of the previous statements on the subject under consideration, the researcher observed the following problems with an attempt to find solution to them in the course of the study. The research identifies the following problem such as mass failure, lack of interest, poor academic performance, unconducive academic environment, and unseriousness on the part of the students etc.

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

This topic is worth being studied as we noticed that there is mass failure in Shorthand every year. Therefore, this research work would reveal some way in which students can improve and develop in Shorthand writing.

Therefore, the objectives of the study are to determine:-

(i) how a conducive environment can enhance effective teaching and learning for the improvement of the students in Shorthand.

(a)How students should be more serious in the learning of Shorthand.

(b)To find out how the pre-knowledge of the students in Shorthand can affect their performances.

(c) How students should try as much as possible to maintain cordial relationship with their lecturers.

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The following research questions will be answered by the researcher

(a) To what extent does lack of conducive environment can reduce students mass failure in shorthand.

(b) How can students who has been familiar with Shorthand from secondary school be more effective in writing shorthand than those who are just meeting it in higher institution?

(c)  How can student seriousness enhance their performances and reduce their failure in Shorthand.

(d)  To what extent can cordial relationship or students teachers relationship can reduce students mass failure in Shorthand.

1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

As some students spend most of their time drilling Shorthand and receiving dictation, even some go an extra mile by recording all the short forms in Pitman Shorthand in their phone, playing it and drilling it everyday in order to improve and enhance their speed yet their performance in Shorthand examination is not encouraging.

Therefore, this research work will help students to have interest in Shorthand to practicalise and improve their speed in writing, it will also show them different ways they can build up their speed in Shorthand and to let the lecturer know how this problem can be tackled or reduced.

1.6 LIMITATION

The scope covered by the research is limited due to some problems faced in the course of this study.

(a)Inadequate time to carryout a thorough research.

(b)Financial constraints also limits the success of the project as a result of the economy meltdown in the country.

1.7 DELIMITATION

The researcher limits the research work to students in (ND2 and HND2) of Office Technology and Management, Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin.
