1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Commercial banks are banks which are mainly established to assist the individuals and private organizations in both rural and urban areas to invest by making financial advices and credit facilities available to the individuals and private organizations.
While merchant banks are mainly whole sale bank. They operate solely in urban centers and only give help to finance investments by way of leasing of property to finance such as finance houses and companies.
The money creating functions of the commercial bank is a function which is peculiar to our case study i.e. bank of the north. It is one of those commercial banks that operate mostly in the Nigerian economy which performs such functions that entail the development of the economy.
In this study, the researcher will highlight the role of the ban in the next century. This included its primary functions of monetary and credit policies and to maintain the growth in domestic liquidity at a level that will curtail the role of inflation at a single digit so as to enhance private savings and investment, ensures exchange rate stability and private support for output and employment growth. the central bank of Nigeria (CBN)
