If you are familiar with the controversies surrounding 2016/2017's admission, you will no doubt it that its an issue you need to be updated here and there as to know the latest gist in that respect.
Controversies has been everywhere since the release of JAMB results where some candidates were given additional 40marks to their scores and subsequently been removed without any reason. This act posted a serious stain on the integrity of JAMB as a body.
JAMB Scrapping Post UTME: A Big Error
Another issue arises when JAMB unilaterally issued a statement scrapping the conduct of POST UTME for 2016/2017 admission and thereafter issue an admission guidelines with which Nigerian Universities should follow without conducting any POST UTME for applicants.
As if that is not enough, in about week after, JAMB announced on its official website that some candidates names has been forwarded to their various universities for admission considerations, while a larger numbers of applicants' names were left behind. This has caused a lot of controversies among applicants who are still wonder on what basis do JAMB recommend students while their own names are left out despite the fact that they scored far above 180.
So many students were so confused and remained restless till this moment. If you remember, I once wrote an article on what could be the JAMB criteria for admission recommendation. You can read it HERE.
NTA's Good Morning Nigeria
Its on this controversy that NTA invited so many stakeholders from all angles in its program Good Morning Nigeria today 26th of July, to hear various opinions on the matter. Among those that were invited was Prof. Abdulahi Bafa, who is a special adviser to Minister of Education, Prof. Biodun Ogunyede, President Of ASSU, Prof. Asaluwa, Unilag's admission chairperson, Prof. Fabian Benjamin, head media of JAMB.
Let me report each of their position one after the other.
Prof Bafa, special adviser to the Minister of Education state it categorically that JAMB did not have any legal right to offer admission to any applicants into any University. JAMB's responsibility is to supervise and make sure admission guidelines are duly followed by various Universities. He concluded his statement that, Nigerian should just accept the ugly truth that, its unfortunate that all applicants who passed JAMB cannot gain admission due to shortage of available space.
Prof. Asaluwa who is the admission chaiperson of Unilag also expressed her view and said that JAMB unilaterally brought up a policy without considering the implication. She claimed that its NUC responsibility to look into how post utme are conducted and they are not complaining of how the exam were been conducted, and why will JAMB scrap it.
She stated Unilag as an example, that 25000 applicants scored above 200 in JAMB and did Jamb expected them to conduct oral screening for such a larger number of applicants? Or what is JAMB's expectation on that?
Prof. Fabian Benjamen who is the Head of media for JAMB claimed by posting, they are not trying to admit applicants for university, they only make recommendation, and the reason why they did not recommend every applicants school scored above 180 to their various Universities, is because of the schools' capacity after considering other factors like catchments area, merit and education less developed area.
Another person on the interview was the VC of Bingham University, Prof. Leonard. Who claimed there is no point in JAMB scrapping post UTME hiding under the allegation of fraudulent attitude by some Universities. He said the claim that all Universities exploit applicant with the post UTME of a thing is not true, because as Bingham University is concerned, post utme are free for all applicants. They only conduct it to admit the best students, not to exploit any one.
I will continue to bring you update on admission as soon as they reach us.
All the best.
