Water Quality Analysis On Water Obtained From Randomly Selected Hand Dug Wells and Boreholes In Nigeria
1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY
According to WHO (2006), about 1.1 billion people lack access to improved drinking water supply. In most cities, towns and villages in Nigeria, valuable man-hours are spent on seeking and fetching water, often of doubt quality from distant sources (Efe, 2005). The results obtained from the research has shown that as regarding the particle sizes in the soil, the values obtained from the sieve analysis from tp1 of 0.5m, tp1 of 1m, tp2 of 0.,5m and tp2 of 1m were obtained to be recorded to be 76.38%, 71.82%, 75.48% and 71.58% and the weight of dry sample before washing was 500g. From the calculated and graphical data it can be determined that the soil sample is a silt and clay content. For all samples tested their specific gravity (GS) ranges within 2.60 – 2.90 value; an indication that the ratio adopted for grading (70%-30%) has little influence on the bulk density (soil sample.)
Annona muricata is an important medicinal plant. The present study deals with the analysis of phytochemical constituents by qualitative and quantitative analysis of Annona muricata leave using ethanol as the solvent. Phytochemical compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins tannins, reducing sugar, ascorbic acid were determined. Quantitative analysis was also conducted to determine the amount of the bioactive compounds present. Alkaloids (2.34 0.01%), Flavonoids (5.13 0.04%), Saponins (2.53 0.25%), Tannins (0.15 0.3%), Reducing sugar (34.26 1.04%), Ascorbic acid (28.32 1.25mg /100g.
This project presents the construction and operation of a light dependents switch using a light dependent resistor a relay used in the circuits energized when darkness falls on the light- dependents resistor, LDR which turns on a 12V bulb. The relay is de-energized when light falls on the LDR, as a results of which the 12V bulb goes off. The switching on is achieved when the intensity of light falling on the LDR is low and the switching off is achieved when the intensity of light falling on the LDR is high and at 100k value of the variable resistor.
The concerned over exposure to drinking water contaminants and the resultant adverse effect on human health has prompted several studies evaluating the quality of drinking water source. 50 Bore Hole water sample was collected from 25 functional Bore Holes in Kakuri, two water samples from each Bore Hole were collected using standard techniques. The physicochemical parameters analyzed include, odour, colour taste, temperature, pH, conductivity, alkalinity, acidity, total suspended solid, total dissolved solid, total hardness and chloride. The Bore Hole water samples were determined using standard procedures. World Health Organization (WHO) and National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) recommended acceptable limit for drinking water were used in the evaluation. All physiochemical parameters in the Bore Hole water samples were showed to be within recommended permissible limit of WHO and NAFDAC standard for potable drinking water standard.
Eleven medicated soaps: Crusader, Septol, 14 days, Funbact, Lifebouy, Safeguard, Tetmosol, TCP, Dettol, Delta and Antigal were investigated for their antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Two cloth washing soaps (Key and Truck) were used as control. Identification of the bacterial species was by standard microbiological techniques which included colonial examination, Gram staining and biochemical testing. Minimum inhibitory and minimum bactericidal activities of the soaps were determined by agar well diffusion method. Profloxacin was employed as a positive control antibiotic.

Result from this study revealed that many plant- pathogenic mould are the subject intense study because they cause disease symptoms that have severe negative effect on the yield or quality of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and its products. The common mould associated with tomato paste were determined to get information on whether the mould the tomato paste originate entirely from the tomato or soil. The species found belongs to some fungal genera Alternaria, Aspergillus fusarium and Penicillium .The species are the types of species that may potentially produce mycotoxins.
